Oppose Electronic Voting Machines
[posted 2003.12.24]

No big plan here, just a warning: Much as I love technology, I have deep concerns about extending technology into our political balloting. Should we really trust something as important as our democratic process to computers and touchscreens? No. Forget efficiency, forget instant vote counts. Democracy is worth taking time for, including the time to mark and count paper ballots that any election official or citizen can touch and verify.

For more information, see the collection of memos from Diebold where the company admits flaws in its software and then encourages employees to cover them up. (The company then proceeded to threaten people posting the memos with lawsuits. Congressman Kucinich of Ohio managed to make them back down -- way to go, Dennis!)

Think it'll work? Tell a friend, tell a legislator, and make it happen! Think I'm dead wrong? Say so -- and come up with a better plan! Either way, let me know what you are thinking.
